The history of Alaska is one that dates back to around 14,000 BC, also known as the Paleolithic period. This is when Asiatic populations crossed the Bering land bridge into the area that is now considered the western portion of the state. When European contact occurred, by way of Russian explorers, native groups made up most of the population in the region.
The state name is derived from the Aleut word meaning mainland. In the 1890s, thousands of miners and settlers relocated to this region. This was mostly the result of gold rushes around the area, such as the Yukon Territory. In 1912, the area was granted territorial status.
Thirty years later, in 1942, Attu and Kiska, two Aleutian Islands were occupied by the Japanese. For the U. S., recovering these areas became a matter of national pride. The set up of military bases added to population growth of nearby cities, and in January of 1953, it was granted statehood.
In 1968, oil was first discovered at Prudhoe Bay. A few years later, in 1977, the Trans-Alaska Pipeline was built. It was both of these accomplishments that led to a major oil boom. Even in modern times, the debate still exists on whether drilling should be done in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge or not.
It is believed that both Inuit and European groups occupied this region early on. Nowadays, there still exists a large separation between populations: the Aleut, two kinds of Eskimos, the Athabascans and the Southeastern Coastal Indians. The practices of these different native groups range, as the people are spread across the large area.
There were some parts of the area in which traders were able to coexist with all locals and other parts in which tension and conflict arose. The tension often resulted in hostages, slavery, villages and more. The DaVinci Code is an excellent example of a new trend in publishing to offer education through entertainment. Some people may have problems with my use of the word ‘education’ as it relates to The DaVinci Code. The book was controversial for its description of Jesus Christ being married to and having children with Mary Magdelene. However, it did make a meaningful impact on church attendance in the years following the book’s release. According to a Gallup poll, church attendance rose a full seven percentage points.
The Goal is another book that use entertainment to educate. Every year, MBA students from across the United States are assigned it as part of their operations management classes. By offering memorable experiences, students can easily retain concepts that sound about as dry as, well, ‘operations management’.
The God Complex is the most recent book in this world of education through entertainment. This is a ‘factional’ novel – part fact, part fiction. The God Complex takes the author’s personal journey through a two decade health care crisis and merges it with a fictional plot. In a recent interview, the book’s author, Chris Titus, stated, “Most of the book is in fact true. The segments of my actual journey were separated, massaged, and rearranged to construct a more engaging story line.” By taking this approach, he was able to spread fifteen years worth of drama, intrigue, and enlightenment across many settings and characters to create an exciting mystery. Readers experience the same discovery process the author underwent as a patient, however, it’s through the lens of a murder mystery.

‘Behind The Smile: the story of Lek, a Thai bar girl in Pattaya’ is the first novel by Owen Jones. It was published on April 19th. 2012. Behind the Smile is a book that Mr. Jones says he has been trying to write for a number of years. It is set in Thailand, but the type of people involved are to be discovered in most countries in the world.
The story is not an uncommon one in richer as well as poorer countries: a young woman gets married but her husband soon starts thinking that he is rather young to become tied to one woman and live a life of toil. He starts carousing and sleeping about. His wife, not being prepared to put up with this, separates from him.
The difficulty arises in Third World countries that people have no state funds to fall back on, which is why family ties are so all important. You could easily die without the support of your family. This usually works well, but not always.
In Lek’s case her father passes away at an early age and leaves enormous debts to the bank with the farm held in security. The future looks bleak as Lek’s mother cannot do more than she is already doing. Lek could begin to help out, but a farm girl’s wages are low. One brother is already working, but the other is too young.
At a family pow-wow, they reluctantly decide that there is no option but to send Lek away to a big city to work, where she will at least be able to pay the bank’s repayment installments off every month.
Lek goes to Pattaya where a family member owns a small bar. She is given a place as a barmaid and she enjoys the excitement of the job. The brilliant lights, earsplitting music and attentive men are new to her.
A month or so thereafter, she realizes that she is pregnant with her ex-husband’s child. That is a major disaster, because it endangers her capacity to pay off the bank, which would ruin her mother and siblings.
This book, ‘Behind The Smile’, looks at Lek’s life from her own point of view and follows her through her fun and frustrations. It tries to demonstrate her thought processes and tell you, the reader, why she takes certain courses of action and what she might rather be doing instead.
You get to be privy to Lek’s hopes and fears as the book takes you through a very important part of her life. You meet her friends, family, work mates and boyfriends and you get to see what makes Lek tick
